Don't want to change opinions anymore (or do I want to ? ;)) but just want you to know; This usability I told about has nothing to do with interface design. It's about hte following:
When you have a splash screen hovering all other windows, a user is forced to take a break from his/her work (you can call this a feature :p). You can't work normally when a window you can't resize or move (and changing this particular splash's properties isn't the holy solution) covers up all the rest. So, you have to wait untill the window appears anyway and then you're off. Having a splash annoys ppl, really. You can make the image as beautifull as possible to annoy 'm less, but one day they'll be bored to see it again. There are ppl really working with their computer, not just pushing aMSN icons and waiting as they only come to their PC to use our software, we're in the multitasking age ;). Another note: we can't do things because ppl are used to it, even if it's "bad". It's like saying "let's start yet another war, ppl are used to it anyway". In my opinion, doing nothing, or showing a small window (with borders!) in the right hand side top of the screen with only the text "amsn is loading, please be patient..." (as a sort of notification), and where ppl can close this window eventually without closing the program, with the window having a "Cancel" button eventually to stop the loading and the program at all... would be a better solution.
