Let me cast a vote in favor of a make install target that prints some
nice message. Perhaps a welcome, or a suggestion to check out the
website, or the docs, or the license, or even just a comment that make
install is not necessary. Anything would be better than the current
"fatal" error.

That makes more sense to me than a How-To, although they are certainly
not mutually exclusive.
