"... answer ridiculous claims from the lunatic fringe." ! ! ! Hey! Hey! Let's be a little bit careful with the name calling here!
The representation at I/O says Android is not dead. Many people's investments in Android may be dead, non-competitive, projects, perhaps morphed into the 50 that are not frozen out (as Anil pointed out in a fractal/recursive sort of way). Google is weeding out, or encouraging differential growth between the 50 chosen ones and the 1738 not chosen ones by denying access to SDK releases. May I remind you that it has been over a third of a year since the last SDK release AND in mid-March developers were informed that otherwise ready releases were being intentionally withheld to make the playing field level for the first deadline. It is reasonable to conclude that releases are now being intentionally withheld to make the field un-level or adverse for the1738 so that the 50 can be differentiated. Look, people go to Nordstrom or Neiman's because the buyers for those stores put stuff on the shelf that is of acceptable quality, style, for them to accept as personal items. A cell phone is a personal item. Google wants good stuff in their store. They want customers to get a clear signal to noise ratio that Android applications are good. Folks whose goals, dreams and investments are getting snuffed out, or set back by the hand of Google, may naturally feel that all of Android is dead or dying... When it is actually only < 97% of the early applications that are getting set back - specifically theirs. Shelf space anywhere is tough to get, and for Android's first impression the concept of shelf space is valid. My biggest grumbling is that our application has more promise of reducing carbon footprint and oil consumption than all of the publicly known selected 50 put together. So from where we stand, it looks like Google is killing trees to turn them into ad copy, while the planet melts and people suffer from high fuel and food prices.
