Indeed. BTW, for a number of years already, the Loadstone GPS project
(www.loadstone-gps.com) has attempted to get around the lack of free
map data, being in a situation not unlike the one we seem to be in now
until those licensing issues are resolved. From

but clearly that leaves a lot to be desired before it can form a
viable alternative, especially since the Loadstone GPS POI database is
still very incomplete and sparse.
