Having apps and games on the SD card is a no brainer. There is a very good reason why iPhones come with all that space--and it is not just for music and movies (just check the iTunes app store and the space requirements for the applications and games coming out).
At the current rate of expansion of the Android Market, you could easily fill up your G1's tiny 70MB in a few months even if you found only a small percentage of the offerings useful to you. I have only 20MB free, and that's before the pay apps--the real space hogs--come out in a few months. I understand that Electronic Arts, for example, is waiting until paid apps are allowable before they bring their games to the Market. One EA game could very well be several MB (or even 10+ MB) on its own. Finally, even my old Palm Treos had more than enough apps and games (and their associated libraries) to exceed 70MB. This is why Palm people would advise people to install as many apps as they could to the SD card. I would hope that Google and T-Mobile are hoping to go beyond Palm in every possible way.
