I was an actual early purchaser of the Pilot 1000. And after a dozen years of owning various Palm models, I can say I stayed with them this long in big part due to their willingness to not throw current customers under the bus. The apps and data that I've picked up over the years still all pretty much work fine on my Treo 700p. Palm's (and originally, USR's) early commitment to a good user experience and good user relations was pretty much the opposite of "caveat emptor". And Palm's failure in that lately is the only reason I'm considering switching. I think that part of selling a first-generation product is that, as much as possible, the vendor will try to fix things so reasonable users end up satisfied. If Google comes back saying "caveat emptor", the English translation of that is, "You were fools to trust the Google brand." Especially given Google's long history of continuous improvement of initially minimal products, I'm sure purchasers expect that things will be made right. A "caveat emptor" attitude would worry me even more as a developer. I want to believe that Google is energetically focused on making it as easy as possible for the maximum number of people to get my app. Suppose people start having space problems and Google's answer really is, "Sorry, buy a new phone." At the very least, it will make me wonder whether Google's really in this to succeed, or whether Android's just a temporary way to undermine another Microsoft revenue stream. And at worst, it will make me think that the iPhone's a better long-term development target. So I hope they solve this one way or another.
