Correct me if I am wrong but as a developer surely you only need the dev phone if you want to make changes to the core android source and test it on the device so you can flash your image to the phone.
You can obviously test core changes and your own apps on the emulator. You can also install your own apps on a normal G1. So what reason do you really need a dev G1 for other than putting your own system image on? Other reason to have a dev G1 might be that it is not tied to a network provider. Plus when I was looking for shipping costs I googled it and found http://androidguys.com/?p=3017 In one of the comments the shipping costs are displayed. I'm sure if people were a bit more patient then they wouldn't have had to fork out the $25, it was only a short time before that info was in the public domain. I'm a developer and dont see the need for me to get the dev phone at this point. Hopefully someone will jailbreak the current update and I wont need to, in the meantime I will just have to wait. If and when I want to release apps through the Android Market I will pay the $25.
