UK Maestro is basically "account withdrawal", that's why it's limited to UK cards ;) 2.) This market segmentation thing (offer other stuff at different pricepoints even, and different payment options, to different countries) is completely broken by design. Hint: In the EU (and in general, but generally it can be slightly harder) it's quite possible to be resident in more than one country. That's a general observation, e.g. the implementation of AmazonMP3 (especially the G1 client) makes one shudder. In my practice that means, I've got German cards, I've got Austrian cards, I've got DSL-to-DSL VPNs so I can switch "IP adress nationality" by accessing the sites from the correct flat, as needed. 3.) If Google Checkout is meant to be competive, they need to address the local market conditions, and for Germany and Austria, 4.) While I'm not 100% sure about the UK Maestro thing, but the explanation that you cannot charge foreign currencies to a UK Maestro card sounds bogus. Hint: Take your UK Maestro card, hop on the train to Paris, buy yourself a French croissant, pay with your Maestro card, and you'll get an EUR charge on your UK Maestro card. Better yet, if you can deal with the DHS bs, hop on a plane, go to an ATM in NewYork, withdraw money, and again you'll get an USD charge on the card. That's at least how DE/AT/CH Maestro cards work. Naturally, the alternate explanation is that this aggressive stance of paying a croissant in Paris with an UK Maestro card persuaded the French to switch to GBP as currency. 4b) It's possible that if they implement UK Maestro by withdrawal from the account that they can only withdraw GBP amounts. Hint, that's why there are exchange rates. 5.) Google is quite aware of the facts, e.g. Google Adwords in Germany DOES offer "Lastschriftverkehr", which would be the more common method for online payments, at least compared to Credit cards.
