Same here. Got my credit card in the first week of college.

Many electronic shops (like MediaMarkt or Saturn) and even McDonald's
don't accept credit cards in most places (except, e.g. at the
airport), and many people don't have a credit card, since a bank card
is sufficient in most situations.

It is one of the reasons why PayPal is more successful here than
Google Checkout.

I just wanted to say thank you very much for pointing this out, being
a typical American I have had a credit card since I was 18 and have
never thought twice about it.  I never considered that maybe a reason
for low international sales could in part be due to limited payment
options offered by Google checkout.
