Apple did make several moves to ensure many people would have iTunes
accounts to purchase apps. When I updated my firmware (on my ipod
touch) from 1.0 to 2.0 (with apps), it cost me $10. I hear that to
update to 3.0 will cost me another $10.

a) this provides a pretty handy cash injection
b) this ensures that I have an iTunes account, and therefore my credit
card info is stored in their system and i can purchase apps

I have not purchased any apps, yet they have my credit card simply
because i wanted the update. Who knows, maybe i will buy an app
someday... It just makes it so simple, so seamless that I don't have
to worry at all about my account/credit card.

I would suggest that this tactic of paid updates would fail miserably
on the android crowd. Instead, I would suggest launching a promotion
to all g1/g2 owners (and get them to see it) to give them a free app
(give them an free 'coupon' for another wise paid app) or lets say $10
towards their account to purchase apps. This would give the users an
incentive to register their cards, and hey, I bet even app developers
would agree to give some copies of their paid apps to increase users
actively purchasing/using the android market.

Any other ideas?
