I guess it's all going to be about how to measure success. Measuring it via third party app sales at the moment could present a different picture than if it's measured by manufacturer adoption.
In the end I decided against the trip to I/O. 1000+ GBP for the whole trip seemed a little too much to pay given that the most important information is most likely going to end up in YouTube, blogs, or mailing lists anyway. In my case - on Android, I can develop against my vision. Not possible with iPhone OS X in its current (and as far as I can see 3.0) form, Java ME and others. Except for Maemo/Qt. > On May 21, 7:52 am, Al Sutton <[email protected]> wrote: > > imho, Android has come a fair way since the G1 was launched, but it still > > has a way to go, but if developers aren't writing apps then the platform > > will start to go into the negative PR spiral that could see it crash and > > burn. It seems as if third party apps do not matter much to Google, at least at this point. The strategy (as stated by Eric Schmidt) is to extend Android over multiple manufacturers and devices. This is arguably playing out well. From that perspective, there's no crash and burn in sight. Unfortunately this means that, unless there's more to that strategy, third party app development is relegated to spare wheel strategy. Squeaking sometimes. Of course there's the engineers that post on these groups here that never seem to rest, but there's an importment element missing. Evident commitment. I suppose we'll see. Google I/O will set the tone for me for the next months. I suppose I'll draw my conclusions based on reaffirmed commitments and announced improvements. Such as: when the ADC II will happen and its terms, and whether the Market will be upgraded.
