For my app, I get about 5 cents per 1000 uses. For most apps, getting enough users (20,000 opens per $ per day) is quite difficult.
The other challenge is getting people to use it. Just having ad- supported apps sitting on their phone provides no revenue. And the issue is that if people like it so much that they use it everyday, a sizable majority probably would pay $2 for it, more than you'd ever get on 3 cents/click.
