Alternative markets suffer the chicken and egg problem; Without developers listing apps users aren't attracted to them, and without users attracted to them developers won't list apps, so it's really down to developers to decide which revenue model and markets they like, because if developers don't support alternative markets by listing apps then those markets will most likely go under and users without market will be left with less and less legal routes to get apps.
Here are the last 3 months download stats, and yes we are growing, but keep in mind that we only have ~1% of the apps market has, and that market comes pre-installed on the most popular devices (so we have a fraction of the number of users market does); June 2010: ~100,000 app downloads July 2010 : ~115,000 app downloads Aug 2010 : ~150,000 app downloads The big jump in August was partly download Augen offering AndAppStore as a Market replacement after mistakenly shipping Market on their tablets, and the SmartQ v7 being released and many of it's users choosing to download the AndAppStore client (our figures show it as now being one of the top 5 devices running the client). Given this we're now pro-actively approaching OEMs and offering them the client on a royalty and contract free basis, which should help drive the numbers even further. But as I said earlier, without developer support the numbers will stagnate, so if you can spare 5 minutes then it's worth giving AndAppStore a try because even if you pick up a couple of hundred extra users that's more ad revenue, paid revenue, or just more people who get a chance to appreciate your work :).
