for those who feel very tough and are eager to reproduce this with any VM solution, here are the steps:
1. create a fresh vm, give it 512m ram, 1 core 1 thread cpu, 20g hdd. 2. install ubuntu 11.04 in it, let it partition the hdd automagically (no idea how much swap it allocates, probably 512m too). 3. (optional) run an update on ubuntu. 4. install all the required packages as described in http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html 5. checkout froyo "-b froyo", as said in http://source.android.com/source/downloading.html 6. try to compile, as described in http://source.android.com/source/building.html 7. after about 8 hours on a xeon 2.4ghz you will end up with a frozen (not really frozen, but as described by Jason Gerecke) ubuntu. 8. "power off" the VM. 9. start it again. 10. after some tine, ubuntu will try to update, but will fail *any* attempt to manipulate the packages. 11. usually at this point enlightenment comes. :) 12. yes, we fit in under a dozen steps!
