Tim, I had a similar experience as your friend. Went from 500-600 downloads a day up until 26th June, and then overnight it crashed to 50 downloads a day and has remained so since then.
I hadn't pushed out a release and the time matches up almost exactly to the changes in the market search algorithm, so I'm betting its the search algorithm, which sucks but there is no way for me to change that. I don't have any solution, wish I did, sorry.
