The indie apps I've seen do really well with sticking in the top 100 tend to stay above 4 stars, and even above 4.25 stars (so it shows 4.5 stars). Most apps lower than that in the top 100 have a license or have already otherwise made a name for themselves -- or the developer has other means of promoting the app. Seeing complaints about the ads being in a bad place in your reviews; you should probably move them. I put mine in the "end of level" screen, off the game screen entirely, and some days I get 2%+ CTR on AdMob ads (other ad providers not so much -- no idea why AdMob has been working so well for the past couple of months). Talk to other indie game developers and see if you can trade impressions. And certainly address the things that people are complaining about.
