Piracy, how could I forget... That, as well as no-charge (free) app
releases that remain installed on users' devices "forever".

I figure Google would have everybody using the Maps API pull new API
keys and give developers a grace period to update and secure their
apps. Finally, the old keys would expire and users of old versions,
including free and/or pirated versions, would see the grid only.

At any rate, we'll need a subscription model in case Google envisions
to charge devs on a ongoing basis. Could be handled directly through
Android Market/merchant accounts. One problem: Devs in countries that
are locked out from charging in Android Market would be locked out
from developing apps using the Google Maps API.
