Right now, the charges incurred for Google Maps are only for the web based

25,000 API loads. According to Google, that represents about 0.35% of map
users.

It's not the end of the world in regard to free maps but this is the
slippery slope that opens the door for charging for all Google's currently
free API products. Once developers are used to paying for these services,
there is nothing to stop Google from lowering the pay threshold on any API.
I'm guessing that's the plan. Keep that in mind when developing anything
serious that uses ANY Google API. Eventually you'll be paying for it.

Has anyone here looked into SimpleGEO? For some applications especially if you want to support tablets without the Google API they might be a solution and have some reasonable rates. They also claim to have a maps API. They have an SDK for Android:
www.simplegeo.com

I've been thinking of using them for my Android API ony tablet apps. And no I don't have anything to do with the company so this in not spam. ;-)
