My first Android phone was a gift, and I used it without any data plan for quite a long time. I did use it as a phone, though, so I was paying for a basic voice plan.

The guy who gave it to me? A friend who I only saw about once a week at the gym. Told him I was interested in Android, and he said he had this extra phone, and would I like it? He thought it sucked, but didn't cancel his plan in time and was stuck with paying for it. And so I started looking into developing on Android...
