So how are you - easily - handing it out for free? I've done Amazon gift certificates - that costs me 30%, or 100% if they just decide they want something else at Amazon more than my app.
I can give them an APK, and if I trust them to not post it out in the open, they will run into problems once the Market has an update, which it will notify them about, but not let them update. I've refunded people after buying - same story as above. I really wish the Android Market just supported discount codes. There are good causes that I have and would support with a free app. Just wish it would be free for me to offer a free app to them. And I have much more sympathy for users spelling and capitalization on the days I've actually tried to type anything on my phone myself.
