He can show the DEMO to his playground buddies. You'll have to make the assessment for your own app whether that is a likely scenario. Thought the playground scenario is unlikely, it is 1.3% of my app users are under 20. That's unlikely to be because of the cost, because it matches the age distribution of the DEMO. If, however, he talked to his dad, his dad would probably pay for it and want it for himself. Then he can talk it up with his hunting buddies. It's a much more powerful endorsement from someone who gladly paid for it. I say dad, not mom, since my users are 96% male. There may be some that really can't pay and there may be some good causes to give away, such as for non-profit search and rescue teams. But there are plenty who leave comments like "I'd use it if it were free" or "how come this isn't free when Google Maps (insert other app) is free?" or "I'd buy it if it were half this price". It is my policy to ignore such comments as there are more comments that say " Wow, this saved me $400" or "A steal for the price". The second group is my target market; the first isn't.
