Because part of this rebranding is to move it beyond selling stuff, to a wider content-management arena. So GPlay is where you're supposed to go to play music, for example; it's a side issue whether you've purchased it yet or not. Which is why the Play Store is just a piece of the bigger picture now; it's a meant to be about more than buying and selling. [Side note... OK, we've seen the Play Store.
