Yes, it could be done as an applet. It wasn't what I originally had in mind,
but it would possibly be easier to make, and would be immediately available
to all applications.

One problem with such an approach is that the functionality would be hidden
from the user, until he specifically enables it. If it's available directly
in all major KDE applications, everybody will discover and possibly use it. 

Or do Plasma applets (or apploids or whatever they're called) behave
differently?
