Right, that would sort of work in this specific example. However, what if it
wasn't an image, but an url or a piece of text? My point is that I don't
want to deal with files or folders *at all*. I want to take this image or
text, do something with it, do something more with it. Finally I may want
to save it as a file, but until then it's just an image, a resource, that
I'm throwing around between programs.

I respectfully disagree. You're saying that if I can't remember the file
path, I can just search for the program that saved it, and when. That's
*more* I have to remember and deal with, plus it's still file oriented.

What I'm suggesting is a way to leave some balls in the air, so to speak. I
the example I gave, I just want to do various things with an image, I don't
want to have to remember arbitrary names of temporary files or to search by
origin or time. I'm looking for a quick repository of resources I'm working
with right now, versioned by changes by various programs.
