Thank you to everyone who has responded to my inquiries. Things make a little more sense.
I think it is a combination of bitmapped fonts, an old ink ribbon, a very early version of the ImageWriter II driver (which I managed to get updated-- it helped a little) and the fact that the ImageWriter I was using seems to have developed a problem with one of the "hammers" causing a streaking effect in the text that it prints. I swapped the unit for an ImageWriter I had sitting in my closet, and the streaking effect appears to be gone. I still probably ought to get a new ink ribbon, though. I am still going to look into getting some software so that I can use TrueType fonts with the printer so things work even better.
