The Apple IIc+ is completely unable to read or write 1.44 Mb disks, even if
you connect an external 1.44 Mb drive to it. It simply doesn't know how to
deal with their format. What you *do* have is an 1.44 Mb disk formatted at
800 Kb, which won't be readable by any USB floppy drive because it uses a
low-level format not supported by them. IIe and IIgs can do 1.44 Mb, but they
require you to plug in an special drive controller card, which isn't an
option in any IIc, obviously.

Furthermore, such disks (1.44 Mb disks written to in a 800 Kb drive) are also
very unstable, because 1.44 Mb disks are less sensitive than 800 Kb ones, and
800 Kb drives just don't have the magnetical strength to write into them
reliably. You should allways use 800 Kb (double density) disks with your
IIc+.
