There's a bit of a difference between paying a premium for a rare item, and having people suggesting that a computer is useless you dump $44 onto some memory board. The former leaves those who are bordering on destitute (I never did say destitute) praying that they will find the prize during their next dumpster dive. The latter discourages the less well off from even bothering with the hobby because something which was once cheap (a free IIgs for instance) turns into a money pit.
