I don't think Byron is trying to be cheap (although he IS frugal in real
life).

The point he is probably trying to get at in his own way is that spend money
on the appropriate hardware for the task YOU envision the machine to perform
and not to dump money in add-ons that do not help that specific function.

My IIgs is a Rev 1 model with a plain Apple SCSI card (purchased from you
Bill and upgraded to rev C ROM), a 120MB HD with GS/OS 6.01, a 1MB memory
card (1.25MB total), SyQuest 44MB removable drive, 3.5" and 5.25" drive,
Monitor, plus a joystick. The machine was purchased for gaming only (the few
IIgs games plus the ability to play the older Apple II games).

The reason I don't have a larger memory card is that all the games I want to
play run fine on 1.25MB and I still have enough ram to boot GS/OS on the HD
and convert disk images to disk with the appropriate utility (just to same
me time flipping disks in and out). I have the plain SCSI card because the
HS SCSI card costs allot more money and would be a problem when I want to
start the machine from floppy with the HD's disconnected. I also don't need
a CPU upgrade.

If somebody did want to run GS/OS 6 exclusively then more ram, a CPU
upgrade, and a HS SCSI card would be a wide addition (if they could afford
it and justify the expense). I have seen people who wanted to perform a task
on their newly acquired machine and end up changing their minds when the
cost for the add-ons was more then they bargained for to do the task.

Its up to the user to decide what if anything he is going to do with the
machine (and decide on a budget), and up to the Apple II community to advise
the person on the best equipment to get that job done (because the people
"been there done that" already). I mean if somebody needs a work car
somebody will automatically say a Rolls Royce is the only way to get to work
and somebody else will say walk, sometimes the correct answer is in the
middle.
