In the root directory there can only be 51 files.

Subdirectories can have any number of files.

According to my Copy 2 plus manual, it has a limitation of 255
files per directory.

Other programs like AppleWorks have similar limitations.

If you are using a GS, you should use GS/OS sys 6.0.1 to copy
those large directories, or use another program like ProSel.

Subject: ProDOS limits

Someone refresh my memory:

How many files can there be in a subdirectory?

I've been working with a gentleman who runs his business on a GS,
using a
program that he wrote in AppleSoft. He has an inventory
subdirectory that
contains a single file for every raw material item he uses--331.
He can
manually put the items in there, but Copy ][+ only wants to copy
over to a
different volume (for backup purposes, and us putting his
material on a
CFFA that he bought) 250--then it stops. I know there was a
limit of 55
files for the root directory, but I thought there wasn't a limit
in a
subdirectory? And even if there was--say that magic 255 number,
why would
it stop at 250? (Even this is suspect since he had 331 in there
before,
and does again, after entering the info in by hand over the
weekend. He
just can't copy it all over.)

Later.................Howard
