I did a little experimentation with ProDOS today, and found something out about file limits.

Using Virtual ][, I created a directory on a 32 meg volume. I then used a BASIC program to create a series of 1 block text files, using a FOR/NEXT loop. After the loop got up to 2500, I interrupted the program, and did a CAT of the A directory.

The files were named A0, A1, A2, A3, etc. The directory listing sped by rapidly, and then suddenly I found it was starting over again! It got up to file A1662, and then the next line had a file named "A", with a filetype of $75, size of 8 blocks (all the others were 1 block), creation date of 12-DEC-04 0:02, and a file length of 862147.

1663 files is $67F in hex; that number does not sound significant to me. SysUtil.Sys can only display 533 files in a directory at one time, otherwise it runs out of memory, so I cannot get to the file to delete it. I ejected the disk, and started up Bernie to look at it. Directory "A" was absent! And then I could not get it to load again in Virtual ][. So the directory structure may be hosed.

So the limit is somewhere below 1662 files.
