Thanks, all--that does explain a lot. I called him and suggested he try a couple of things:

1) copy his recreated files to two separate subdirectories on another disk--say, 115 or so each.

2) try copying one by one the additional files over 250 that C2+ refused to copy from his working disk to a backup volume and see if that works

3) permanently split the files and rewrite his program (it's in AppleSoft) to access whichever it needs between the two subdirectories. That way he shouldn't ever run into this problem again.

He's going out of town for the rest of the week, and I'll be out of touch next week, so when we finally get back together in a couple, I'll report back what the outcomes are.
