I'm sure it IS irritating and I think it could easily be fixed if the browser
allowed one to specify the FORM of the converted filename i.e. as the default
above or as a completely NEW name based on date and time (which you may already
find in your cache - take a look).
However, (and I know they are not going to go away soon) the problem is just
as much in the filenames as in the browser IMHO.
8.3 allows for more than 3.25x10^32 different filenames, all with the same
extension.
No one has that many bytes on their harddrives let alone directory entries.
That would take 60million 1milliongigabyte drives for every person on the planet.
Not likely in this century either. <g>
