OK, now that I understand what you need.<g>
The problem is actually with MSDOS version 7. (not with Arachne)
To demonstrate...
Open an MSDOS prompt and try to show a long file name in a directory
listing.
Not only will each file be shown as 8.3
But, each directory name will also show as 8.3
Arachne itself actually _can_ recognize the long_file_name.
But only if the Operating system that sends the file name actually sends
the "long_name" and _not_ it's "shortened_name".
In the case of accessing a long file name on your HDD, it's MSDOS 7
that is sending the short_name to Arachne instead of the long_name.
Web servers send the long_name and Arachne receives them just fine.
I just "fired-up" Win95 and from an MSDOS prompt I typed this,
c> dir c:\progra~1\*.* > i:\1recv\lfns_ns.txt
----lfns_ns.txt---
Volume in drive C is W95
Volume Serial Number is 3826-1A06
Directory of C:\Program Files
. <DIR> 02-25-99 7:00p .
. <DIR> 02-25-99 7:00p ..
ACCESS~1 <DIR> 02-25-99 7:00p Accessories
COMMON~1 <DIR> 02-25-99 7:11p Common Files
DIRECTX <DIR> 02-25-99 7:04p DIRECTX
ICW-IN~1 <DIR> 02-25-99 7:00p ICW-Internet Connection Wizard
MICROS~1 <DIR> 02-25-99 7:11p Microsoft Reference
NETZERO <DIR> 07-19-99 8:22p NetZero
PRODNET <DIR> 02-27-99 6:41p Prodnet
QUICKT~1 <DIR> 04-15-99 10:36p QuickTime
WINDOW~2 <DIR> 02-25-99 9:14p Windows Media Player
WINZIP <DIR> 02-25-99 9:09p WinZip
0 file(s) 0 bytes
12 dir(s) 913,608,704 bytes free
---------------------------
As you see, MSDOS 7 showed the short_names
I then "fired-up" Arachne in an MSDOS window from within W95.
Attached is the directory listing of c:\progra~1\*.* which MSDOS 7
sent to Arachne.
Also find attached, the directory listing sent to Arachne by an
Apache web server.
As you can see, Apache sends the long_name. (and Arachne can access
the links to those long_names)
I hope this information has been helpful.
