There have been some files recently uploaded to Simtel's MS-DOS site
concerning long file names for DOS. I have noticed them as I subscribe to
Simtel's newsletter, but don't know what they do.
I have also clipped some articles from PC Magazine concerning LFN's, but have
not read them in detail. Apparently in W98/95, there are aliases in 8.3 form
in which the first x letters (6 *or* less) of the LFN are retained, followed
by the tilde (~), then a number with the number incrementing each time in the
event the first x letters already exist.
Hope this helps.

(=collection) of HTML files of chemical data, downloaded from the web sites of
a large number of chemical suppliers. On these sites, the HTML files are
stored with long file names. Unfortunately my system (DOS 6.2 & Win 3.1)
cannot handle long file names, and I find the downloads of consecutive file
names end up with only the last one, because each one has over-written the
previous one if the first six characters are the same. i.e. nnnnnn~1.htm.<<
