I have to disagree with you on this one Michael.

The problem I have seen in too many mailing lists is that novice
sends "list reply" to individual, and then individual has to forward it
to list. That slows things down, and also gets people pixxed off
because newbie doesn't even know that list response goes to list!
If you don't want people replying to the list, then remove the "reply
to" line on the mail! However, what good is a list that never gets any
messages? That would solve slow server problem you mention below ...

This in not realistic. The way the list is manageable now for many
of us is that we can scan subject line and delete some without reading.
If we are forced to digest mode, many of us simply will not have the time
to try to separate message from quote from next message down through 30
or 40 messages. And you well know that what the subject line is has
nothing to do with content of message many times.
I was on one mailing list digest because it is hard to keep track of
over 200 messages a day. But finding the messages among the quotes
[particularly when non-literate people would quote entire digest] was
nearly impossible, and I was forced to switch from digest to individual
messages.
If your server can't handle it, start the list on onelist.com; it's
fast, and if you take individual messages rather than digest, you can
get past the ads & crap rather easily.
