If the GDFN is anything like the late lamented Cleveland Freenet, it
undoubtedly expects you to call in with an async terminal pgm (e.g.
Banana, Procomm, Telix) and d/l your files using Zmodem.
If you were working on a Unix or Linux machine, you could telnet into
Freenet and use the "sz" program to fetch files via Zmodem. There are
standalone Zmodem pgms available for DOS (e.g. Texas Zmodem, DSZ, etc.)
that might function similarly, but I've never tried it. (Some of those
pgms were originally intended as "external protocols" for early versions
of Procomm which did not have Zmodem built in.)
If your ISP gives you a "shell" account, try this: Use your telnet client
to log on to the shell. When you are online with that, use the online
telnet client to telnet to Freenet. Use the online sz to fetch files over
to your shell's home directory via Zmodem. Then exit from the shell, and
use your ftp client to fetch the files from your ISP to your own computer.
That sounds like a lot of work, but you have to compare it to the
advantages/disadvantages of dialing in to Freenet with the async terminal
pgm. (e.g., is it a local call, are there too many busy signals, etc.)
There is yet one other option: You could ask GDFN tech support whether it
is possible to fetch files via ftp sted zmodem. Perhaps it has an ftp
host that would let you do that.
