Weirdness & strange things ...
If I want to export an html page to a text file, I naturally select the
printer icon. I type in the path and name of the file I want, and hit
the "export" button.
I'm not returned to the page I printed. All that happens is that the
"print utility" page goes back to default with PAGE.TXT in the field for
export.
I read mail, I send a reply. I exit the editor and am taken back to a
different message than the one I was reading -- often a message I've
previously deleted but which is [of course] in the cache file or
whatever.
And now I'm beginning to feel like someone pulled the teeth of my
Pentium and sent me back to the dark ages of 286. Arachne is taking
FOREVER to load pages from cache, to load pages like the 'print utility'
and let's not even talk about how long it is taking to load some web
pages. :<
I'm going to save this to outbox, exit Arachne, and do some system
testing. Don't want to blame Arachne for a system that has simply
dropped from 223MHz to 4.5MHz.
Well, Norton says the system has a computing index of 792.7 ... so I'm
not running like a 286. Arachne has plenty of conventional memory to
play with when this happens [online with 124K memory available], there's
50K of free XMS to swap to and from, there's plenty of space to spare
for tmp files on the HDD with 34Mb, there's 10Mbytes of RAMdrive for the
TEMP directory & Temp *is* set for there. So why does it take 20-30
seconds just to delete mail, and even longer to load some of the system
utilities like printing and such?
I can't understand what the heck has changed! Yes, I've started to
experiment with DGI stuff [thank you to the young lady who pointed me
to dgi.txt], but these problems started *before* that. And additing a
new file.dgi definition to MIME wouldn't have caused this problem, for
Pete's sake!
I'm going to make certain virt pages are disabled in the ACF I copy over
when I boot to my configuration, but I doubt that will help either ...
since Arachne doesn't want to do frames & tables in under 2 minutes,
doesn't want to load pages from HDD in under 2 minutes etc etc &
frustration.
Is this an evil plot to drive me crazy?? It's working!
