Perhaps you have an old 1.x version of Debian 
that uses only 16meg of HDD space for its 
base installation.  But version 2.1 (which 
has been out for over a year) requires 35meg 
of HDD space for the Base Debian system.
See section 2.3 of the Debian 2.1 installation
instructions (/install/ch-hardware-req.html).

Any Arachnoids thinking of installing Debian 2.1
(in order to try out the Linux version of Arachne) 
would be well advised to use at least an 80meg HDD.
This leaves room for swap, Arachne and its support 
files (SVGAlib?).
