Hi Reuben,

I would make all of the changes in DOS mode using edit arachne.cfg. But,
FIRST, copy ARACHNE.CFG to ARACHNE.SAF. (At DOS command line, type: copy
arachne.cfg arachne.saf).
At the beginning of your ARACHNE.CFG file, you have the line:
Profile FASTPC.ACF
Change FASTPC.ACF to the name of your choice. That name will appear in the
Profile window on Arachne's dialup page. As far as I can tell, that is all
that parameter is used for.
When you want to change profiles, click on the "Profile" button on the dialup
page, click on "browse *.ACF profiles" in the screen that appears, then
select the profile that you want from the list of profiles (.acf files) that
appear.

immediately after hitting the 'F7' key to switch back to Arachne (or
whatever!) is when I get the error msgs., but they flash and then
disappear... anyways, I paused it, and it says, in addition to:
PPP LINK IS DOWN, DRIVER NOT INSTALLED
it says:
INVALID COM DEVICE COM2<<
First of all, you have to make sure that you have the modem on both machines
set up for the same com port or you will have to have different ARACHNE.CFG
files for each machine. On your 333MHz machine, is your mouse a PS/2 mouse?
If so, the internal modem may be set up to be on COM 1. At the command line,
type: "msd" (without the quotes) and see if you can find out how the modem is
set up. Since you said that you swapped drives from the Compaq to the 333MHz
machine, I assume that you are not shy about opening a case. If you can't
figure out from MSD which port is your com port, then check the jumper
settings on the internal modem. The jumpers may refer to IRQ's rather than
COM ports. Does the internal modem card have one or two connectors? (If it
has two RJ-11 connectors, they may be labled on the card as A and B.)
Port IRQ I/O Address
1 4 3f8h
2 3 2f8h
Compaqs are a little quirky as they slip in some proprietary requirements, so
I would suggest that you get Arachne up and running on the 333 machine first.
Since you have been getting some error messages, I would suggest that before
you try to run Arachne again, you go to the Arachne directory and at the
command line, type: "arachne -u" (w/o "). While it may seem like it does
nothing, I have found that when Arachne does not exit cleanly, it leaves
something stored somewhere that affects restarting Arachne. The "arachne -u"
seems to take care of that problem.
Hope this helps.
