OK, another couple questions...
"NOTE 1: Give the "Profile" a name .."
how do I do this? ...or is this what you mean by the creation of a file
w/ that (suggested) name of "FW.ACF"? and, at that point, how do I switch
between one "*.acf" file and another?

ok, do I do that in DOS mode, w/ the 'edit arachne.cfg' command, or... is
there a better way?
**ALSO** this may help clarify my struggles---
I had the bright idea to hit the 'pause' button at the right time...
immediately after hitting the 'F7' key to switch back to Arachne (or
whatever!) is when I get the error msgs., but they flash and then
disappear... anyways, I paused it, and it says, in addition to:
PPP LINK IS DOWN, DRIVER NOT INSTALLED
it says:
INVALID COM DEVICE COM2

The weather here in Tucson is starting to warm up. The ice in the Santa
Cruz
River should break up any day now --- it has been creaking and groaning for
several days. Once that happens, we should be able to fish for sand trout.
We had a 6-inch rain a month or so ago, but don't expect any in the next
couple of days. [N.B. The Santa Cruz River is a normally dry stream bed.

We both have similar machines and I also use Freewwweb, so I think that I

help you in that respect.

NOTE 1: Give the "Profile" a name that will identify which profile you are
using, e.g., FW.ACF for browsing using Freewwweb; FW-HOT.ACF for getting
your
mail from Hotmail, etc.
NOTE 2: These would get your mail from Freewwweb, but not from Hotmail.
You
would have to create a different profile to download your mail from Hotmail
using the proper SMTP and POP3 entries for Hotmail.

Once you make the changes to ARACHNE.CFG and are able to browse the web thru
Freewwweb, copy ARACHNE.CFG to FW.ACF (or whatever you want to name it).
Then go thru ARACHNE.CFG again and make changes to SMTP and POP3 so that you
can get mail from Hotmail. Once that works, copy ARACHNE.CFG to FW-HOT.ACF
(or whatever you want to name it.)
Freewwweb is apparently experiencing growing pains and has too few lines at
their telephone numbers which makes connections hard some times of the day.
I am going to post this message to the list and also send it to your Hotmail
and Freewwweb addresses.
