Hello all you Linux fans and experts;
I've made a little progress in the last 3 days.
Say 12 hours spread over 3 days. I'm not as dumb as it looks, because I've
been writing documentation for beginners as I go along. <g>
Unfortunately, almost all the documentation available for Dragonlinux is
online. And you can't get online. <22>
There was not the SLIGHTEST hint built in on how to get online.
No mention of how to setup PPP either.
I have found Midnight Commander to be a godsend. Without that, I might as
well turn it off. The built-in editor is VERY satisfactory, and _I'm_ picky.
With no clues available, I tried a few things at random.
Pure luck: Typed setup. GOT Slackware setup.
Hunch: Typed pppsetup. I'llbedamned. GOT PPPSETUP.
That went pretty well. Too bad they couldn't have provided THAT clue.
Could someone please help me with the following:
Question #1)
After setup I typed ppp-go (as per instruction in pppsetup)
Nothing happened. The prompt returned.
Tried many things - including ppp-off.
Next day I went thru it all again after writing it up.
This time, by accident, I messed about for quite some time after typing
ppp-go and the modem went offhook and dialled. On subsequent trials I found
that NOTHING happens for 60 seconds EVERY TIME after typing ppp-go.
I found the script file and changed the Timeout statement to 10Secs.
No change. Still sleeps for a minute before dialling.
Any ideas ?
Question #2)
The instructions say I should see the connect string and dialog on the screen.
Instead, I see nothing until the login is complete and then I see the Local
and Remote IP numbers. It specifically says ppp-go -q makes it quiet.
Any idea on how I can get it to be more verbose ?
Question #3)
Since I see those numbers, I assume I'm online. And ifconfig seems to say so.
But Lynx can't connect to the remote host.
And Ping can't find my ISP. When I do: ping hwcn.org, ping answers:
Unknown protocol icmp.
Can you clue me in here ?
Thanks.
