My version of Linux (Debian 2.1) has a default console keymap
that defines iso-8859-1 characters as a combination of two ascii
characters following the "compose" key, which is [CTRL-.]. So
for , I would enter CTRL-. + ' + o, etc.

It's been a while since I looked at the documentation, but all
this seems to be part of the standard installation of the
operating system. I didn't have to do anything except find out
about it. I believe there is a Keyboard How-To and more info
in "man" keytables, loadkeys, and dumpkeys. "$ dumpkeys | grep
compose" outputs a list of all the combinations.

Of course, things aren't quite so simple in DOS , but using
the keyswap program, I can create an alternate key mapping
similar to the Linux one.
