While I agree that WinNT is a resource hog, I can't agree
with your comment about Linux.  I use Linux exclusively on
old hardware and it's very nice as a web client or server.

The only "problem" with old hardware is that you can't
use the latest point-and-click configuration tools for
setting things up.  So, for old hardware, you actually
have to learn how Linux works.

FACT:  It is just as easy for an experienced DOS user to 
learn Linux as it is for a newbie to learn DOS.  For a
month or two you feel like an absolute idiot, but gradually
(by trial and error) you develop competence.
