Gentlepersons,
Please take heed.
Although APM.ID may be required to properly install the package[s],
people can suddenly find themselves without information on a package
because they downloaded and installed another APM.
Why?
Because too many of the packages are using duplicate file names. OK,
"copying" is apparently the same on each, deal with GNU standards. So
if one copying file overwrites another copying file, no biggie.
However, the README files with each packet are -- HOPEFULLY -- unique to
the program. As a consequence, readme files should remain readable --
not be overwritten.
When I discovered what was going on, I took the time to exit Arachne and
do what I think the package makers should do: Give the readme & other
software specific files distinctive names!
Readme for SSH is now named Readme.SSH, and readme for QV will soon be
named Readme.QV ...
What to do about various configuration files that are randomly dumped
into the main directory I do not know ... since changing the name of the
file would mean changing and recompiling source in most instances. It
might be a good idea to consider designing your APM packages to
completely unpack [except for distinctive readme ?;] into its own
directory much as QV currently does.
As a user who really needs to read README stuff, please seriously
consider these modifications so files don't get lost.
And there's another nice reason to consider having your package in its
own directory -- uninstalling the software is easier! True, you want
people to use your software, but if they need to uninstall and have to
guess and what belongs to which, they won't like your software nearly as
much. [It would probably be asking too much for you to include an
"uninstall" program with instructions, right??]
The foregoing, as always, IMNSHO
