Dear list-members,

Arachne (several versions) connects to the net only in the DOSbox
of Win98SE on my Pentium133. When I "restart in DOS mode" it dials, I get
(show terminal window Yes):

CONNECT 45333/LAPM/V42.bis
Autologin enabled
Trying SLIP/PPP

and that is the end of it.

In the last list-digest I did read from Clarence Verge to set
UseTerminal NO
Autologin NO

It made no difference to me. BUT there happen very strange things with
arachne.cfg. I tried "exec epppd" and "ppp" in one of the "Answere lines".
It did not help, but I did find signs like the ones you got in earlier
times as PPP-packets on the screen in one of the "Waiting for" lines.
As I tried the Initstring for my external modem Windows uses another
strange thing happened. The initstring is very long and as I tried to
use it with Arachne I got halfway down its length a "No Carrier"
message. In arachne.cfg I did find in one of the "Waiting for" lines:
" se terminal YES"......it lacks the U.

Who does write into the arachne.cfg? Is that the reason why the
ppp-driver does not start?

Changing the mouse of COM1 with the modem on COM2 does not help.
portinfo.exe finds my modem on COM2 but says it is a fax-modem with
2400baud. It is in fact a V90-modem and can K56flex too. DEBUG gives the
correct (2f8 COM2, 3f8 COM1) addresses.

To make it a bit more complicated: Arachne works with my ISP, my
loginname and my password on Guenter Bietzigs Pentium3 in the DOSbox of
Win98 and in "restart in DOS-mode". Why not on mine? Could it be a
simple thing like a broken wire?

Thank you for reading my bad English. But this enigma bothers me.

Regards
Gerald
