I bought a new Duron 750 for 550USD not long ago so I think you have a way
to high price on that used machine.

Actually Arachne is the *only* browser that supports SHTML (through
shtml.apm) however (and this is important!) the browser NEVER parses SHTML
files that are sent from a server. So all browsers support SHTML generated
HTML pages, but only Arachne (AFAIK anyway) support SHTML pages on your
own HD.

All you who sit on 386's should have been able to upgrade to
(atleast) 486's for several years for the low cost of 0 USD (or perhaps
10 at the most). Pentium IIs are old things that people probably are
starting to throw away now... (yeah I know it's weird but take advantage
of it). You should be able to easily pick up used Pentiums for almost
nothing, and pay some low fee for those "slow" machines.

It would be faster yes, but it wouldn't help you if you've already got
some "decent" ammount of memory (8+). A friend is planning to buy some
more RAM for his machine, and I said: "640MB should be enough for everyone"
(Yes 640MB - that would be his new ammount, Windows was accessing the
swap too often with his current 384MB <BG>).
