Yes, I know. More like two hundred bucks. That's what got me
thinking, you can buy a much better, faster, more capable computer
for around two hundred bucks. I can afford that, so why not
ditch the 386 and stop futzing around?

Yes, I feel that way too. Things shouldn't have to work the way they
do--but they do. I find myself frequently wanting to interact with
the world via the Internet the way that it is now and that includes
Javascript, CSS, and all the toys in great abundance.

Yes, I quite agree. The more generic the better.

Frequently not an option. Many things are site specific. Such
as current Ozzfest ticket information. The only alternative to
buying tickets over the internet is lining up in person at the
Ticketmaster outlet at 8 AM the day tickets go on sale. Or you
buy them from home over the Internet three weeks in advance with
a tee shirt and a poster included.
And the only readily available source of information for some
products is a website laced with Javascript and CSS. The
example I gave is a real one: http://www.takecontrol.com

Not HTTPS, just javascript and CSS at www.takecontrol.com There is also
an 800 number, but all they send you is a little brochure. There is
extensive information on the website which I was able to read via a
computer at the public library. It is more and more routine that
information is presented via javascript buttons or some other widget
that Arachne doesn't support. This is regretable, but absolutely true.

"Take Control" is a soybean based vegetable spread that helps people
lower their cholesterol. It helps you "take control" of your health.
I make referance to the site as an example of extensive Javascript
and CSS usage.
