But honestly ...
Bernie is completely right ... you will get a Pentium for nearly nothing.
And IMHO you should try it ;)

I have put my also 5 years old pentium into the other room, installed
linux, and it now 'plays' linux server.
OK it makes sense here because of the 24/7 cable internet connection ...
but even without that you could set up fetchmail and leafnode (for news)
and make a cronjob that downloads mail/news 2-3 times a day.

there are many things you could do with it ...
