Yes, that's exactly right. In December of 1995 I bought a 386dx33
with 8megs and a decent monitor for $150. It was reconditioned and
guaranteed. I upgraded from an XT that I had bought two years
previous to that for about the same price.
I've used that 386 everyday for over five years now. A year ago
somebody gave me a 486dx66 with 16 megs that I still need to
sort out.(it has some sort of memory problem). I may not bother
with it.
Until recently most of my computer time was spent logged onto a
Unix shell account with Telix, surfing in text mode with Lynx and
using Pine for a ton of email, so my continued use of the 386 is
not as irational as it might seem.
When I get another computer I'm sure it will be another $150 five
year old something. That's my price point. I don't have the expertise
or more importantly the patience to sort through and troubleshoot
really used equipment. I like to go the reconditioned and guaranteed
to be in working order route.
