OK, on your system they are not working.
I'm wondering if maybe your FAT is very slightly corrupted.
This has happened to me on several occasions and the result is a
directory which can be read from but not written to. (but only under
certain conditions which I have not been able to pinpoint)
If you don't already have Norton Utils (specifically "Disk Doctor")
Grab this... http://www.angelfire.com/id/glenndoom/ni.zip
Unzip it to c:\ with /d option to rebuild the directory structure.
NI.BAT will then be in your root dir and everything else in c:\ni
So just type ni<enter> to launch "norton intigrator". Then run
disk-doctor on the drive in question.
